Machine learning and robotics will transform space exploration, says former ISRO chief Kiran Kumar
Artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotics could “fundamentally” transform space exploration, former ISRO chairman A.S. Kiran Kumar said on October 1, 2026, during an event at Srinivasa Institute of Technology and Management Studies (SITAMS). Speaking on “AI and ML in Space Science,” he noted India’s space programme has focused on practical benefits such as weather forecasting, cyclone warnings, fisheries support, tele-education and telemedicine. He traced the country’s progress from SLV and ASLV to PSLV, crediting Dr. Vikram Sarabhai’s vision. Kiran Kumar cited milestones including Chandrayaan-1’s detection of water molecules, Mangalyaan’s first-attempt Mars success, Chandrayaan-3’s lunar landing and Aditya-L1. He said AI is already used in satellite data analysis, autonomous navigation, robotics and disaster management, and urged students to strengthen fundamentals and innovation.
