MacKenzie Gore beats A's for eighth victory

MacKenzie Gore earned his eighth victory by limiting the Athletics while the Cubs’ relief situation swung on a shaky moment from Daniel Palencia. Coming in during the sixth Tuesday against the Brewers, Palencia entered with a 3-1 lead and runners on but quickly surrendered a run-scoring balk. He was then hurt by defensive and offensive follow-through: Seiya Suzuki misjudged a fly toward Wrigley Field’s wall for an extra-base hit by Andrew Vaughn, and Christian Yelich later drove a two-run homer. Since returning from the injured list, Palencia has allowed six runs in 3 1/3 innings across four appearances, and he’s not expected back in a closing role.
