Make an old phone feel like new using these open-source Android apps

Reviving an older Android phone doesn’t have to mean buying a new handset. This guide highlights free, open-source apps that aim to deliver a modern look and better day-to-day performance without requiring top-tier hardware. It starts with launcher alternatives such as Kvaesitso for a distinct experience, plus options like Lawnchair or Victoria Launcher for familiar, Pixel-like or Niagara-style interfaces. For browsing, Firefox is recommended for privacy and lower telemetry, with Fennec noted as a variant. To improve photo results, PhotonCamera is suggested, though it’s not in the Play Store by default and needs the IzzyOnDroid repo or a configured client like Droid-ify. reFra is proposed as an expressive gallery and local-sync alternative to Google Photos.
