Massive growth' of second-hand fashion apps in Australia

Australian shoppers are increasingly turning to second-hand fashion apps, a trend retailers and analysts say is accelerating alongside the country’s heavy clothing consumption. Depop says Australia is among its fastest-growing markets, while Vinted expanded Down Under in July with no selling fees and temporarily discounted shipping. Used-clothing seller Lillian Scott and long-time reseller Jess Gilliland both cite convenience and environmental appeal, with Gilliland estimating she has bought about 200 items in six years across eBay, Depop and Vinted. Australia has a “massive growth” clothing market, and in 2024 The Australia Institute reported 56 new clothing items per person annually on average.
