Mbappe scores twice as France breeze past Sweden into World Cup last 16
Kylian Mbappe scored twice as France beat Sweden 3-0 at the World Cup on Tuesday, booking a last-16 clash with Paraguay. The match at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey was watched by 80,663 fans, with Mbappe breaking the deadlock just before halftime in the last-32 tie. France had already hit the woodwork twice, including efforts from Mbappe and Michael Olise, and controlled the game with dominance in possession and shots on goal. Olise set up Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola for the second goal in the 53rd minute and then provided a pass for Mbappe to seal the win. Mbappe’s two strikes moved him level with Lionel Messi on six goals in the tournament’s golden boot race, and he now has 18 World Cup goals overall, one behind Messi’s record of 19. France play Paraguay again on Saturday in Philadelphia.
