Micron Begins $9.3 Billion Japan Plant Expansion To Boost AI Chip Production - Micron Technology (NASDAQ:
Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) has begun work to expand a semiconductor factory in Japan aimed at mass-producing advanced chips for generative AI and other applications. The Boise, Idaho-based company will invest about $9.3 billion in the expansion at a new plant in Hiroshima Prefecture, according to NHK World, citing Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The ministry will provide roughly $3.3 billion in subsidies. Construction is planned in phases, with equipment installation scheduled to start in the first half of 2028. Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra attended the groundbreaking with senior Japanese officials, and METI minister Akazawa Ryosei also spoke, emphasizing semiconductors as strategic materials for economic security. Micron currently produces DRAM at the facility and previously acquired the site in 2013 from Elpida Memory, which included a 300mm DRAM fab in Hiroshima. The move aligns with a global ramp-up to meet AI-driven demand. Micron is also pursuing major US expansion projects, including new fabs near Syracuse, New York.
