MLB restricts dugout iPad use to prevent use of AI to make decisions - AOL
Major League Baseball has restricted iPad use in dugouts to prevent artificial intelligence from being used to support in-game decisions. The league said the iPads had access to video and data provided by MLB, and teams previously could use custom tabs for additional programs. Starting Wednesday night, when the second half of the season began, MLB made those custom tabs inaccessible to clubs. MLB executive vice president of baseball operations Morgan Sword wrote in a June 11 memo that in many cases the custom tab expanded iPad use beyond its intended purpose by providing recommendations related to substitutions, pitch calling, and other decisions typically handled by players and coaches. MLB said a review by its competition committee found clubs had been compliant with regulations. MLB previously eliminated video during the 2020 COVID season and later restored it in 2021.
