Morrisons launches AI trolleys trial but shoppers have spotted a major flaw

Morrisons is trialing AI powered trolleys at its Preston store, the first such rollout in the UK. The carts, known as Caper Carts and supplied by Instacart, feature touchscreens, sensors, cameras and built-in scales to identify items, weigh produce, and track spending in real time. Shoppers can scan items as they shop, with an onboard screen showing a running total and discounts applied via linked Morrisons More cards. The technology has been used by U.S. retailers such as Kroger, Aldi and Coles, but this is its first UK trial. While excitement grows, customers worry about theft or vandalism, prompting discussions about security. Morrisons says the trolleys include anti-theft features to alert staff if someone attempts to leave without paying, and the devices are weatherproof and designed to be stored and charged in groups. The Preston test aims to gauge customer response before a wider rollout across the network, as Instacart notes the system can operate like standard trolleys and support continued battery charging when grouped, reflecting a broader digital shift in shopping.
