NASA's Artemis III crew is ready but can Moon wait?

Artemis III's crew selection underscores NASA's emphasis on hardware readiness alongside human exploration. Named June 9 at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, the four-person crew is led by Randy Bresnik, a NASA veteran, and includes Luca Parmitano of the European Space Agency with NASA mission specialists Frank Rubio and Andre Douglas. NASA astronaut Bob Hines will serve as the backup. Bresnik has previously flown on Space Shuttle Atlantis in 2009 and ISS Expedition 53 in 2017, accumulating more than 32 hours of spacewalk time. The roster reflects a balance of experience across U.S. and international partners, with Parmitano marking the first ESA astronaut assigned to an Artemis flight. Parmitano, 49, is an Italian Air Force colonel and a two-time ISS veteran becoming the first ESA astronaut on an Artemis mission. His selection signals Europe's growing contribution, including the European Service Module powering Orion during flight.
