xCruzo Brief

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is set to launch this weekend and is meant to complement—not replace—Hubble and the James Webb Space Telescope. While Hubble and Webb deliver highly detailed views, Roman will survey vast portions of the sky, using its Wide Field Instrument to image an area 100 times larger than Hubble with comparable quality. Over a five-year prime mission, Roman is expected to map more than two billion galaxies and collect about 20 petabytes of data, targeting dark energy, dark matter, and the largest exoplanet census, including rogue planets. It also carries a coronagraph for direct imaging of giant exoplanets from the Sun-Earth L2 point.
