NATO Military HQ Intern Arrested for Espionage: Alliance Vetting Blind Spot Exposed

NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Belgium made headlines after the arrest of an internal intern over alleged espionage, highlighting a security-vetting blind spot inside the alliance’s most sensitive command site. Belgian prosecutors said a Canadian woman of Chinese origin working as an intern in Mons was arrested on July 25, 2026, suspected of spying for a third country and belonging to a criminal organization. Authorities found access was not stopped at the perimeter; SHAPE security services flagged the individual and the matter was escalated to Belgium’s General Intelligence and Security Service and then to federal prosecutors. Searches were conducted on July 23 at her residence and at her SHAPE workplace, and an arrest warrant was issued on July 24. SHAPE stated there is no indication NATO readiness or command-and-control arrangements were affected.
