Says it disables another commercial ship trying to breach blockade and reach Iran | WBBM Newsradio 780 AM & 105.9 FM
The U.S. military has stopped another merchant vessel attempting to breach the blockade of Iranian ports, a U.S. official told AP on Saturday. The Gambia-flagged bulk carrier Lian Star ignored warnings overnight as it tried to enter an Iranian port in the Gulf of Oman. The ship was disabled by U.S. aircraft and remains adrift; forces have not boarded it. With this latest action, the U.S. has stopped six ships breaching the blockade, with one allowed to proceed since the start on April 17. A fragile ceasefire has held since April 7, while talks continue on extending it by 60 days and on Iran's nuclear program. The U.S. blockade aims to limit Iran's shipments and weaken its economy, amidst global energy-market disruptions. President Trump has yet to decide on extending the ceasefire or reopening the strait.
