GCHQ unveils new world-first AI cyber defence system to fend off Russian threat

GCHQ has unveiled plans for a pioneering national AI cyber shield, believed to be the first of its kind globally, with an expected five-year window to become operational. The system will deploy autonomous AI agents to detect and flag threats across critical national infrastructure, airlines, telecoms firms, and other major companies, aiming to dramatically reduce the likelihood of breaches such as the Jaguar Land Rover incident. The proposals were outlined by GCHQ director Anne Keast-Butler during the agency's inaugural annual lecture at Bletchley Park, the wartime headquarters of its predecessor. She framed artificial intelligence as an 'unstoppable force' and urged the UK to harness this technology for good, embedding frontier AI into cyber defence while balancing risk and ethics.
