Independent journalist Nick Shirley returned from Spain after documenting a surge of an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 Moroccans into Ceuta, a Spanish enclave, last week. The influx, he reports, began after thousands—mostly military-age men—crossed the border and swam around barriers. Shirley said he was in Ceuta Sunday to cover the aftermath, including migrants defacing Spanish graves, confronting locals and his team, and an incident in which a knife was used to chase him and a crew member. Footage also shows migrants thanking Spain’s left-wing prime minister Pedro Sánchez for “letting them in.” Italy’s Giorgia Meloni warned the influx threatens European security and urged suspending free movement under Schengen. Spain’s government says nearly 40,000 of the 60,000-plus entered illegally had been returned by Friday.
