North Korean hackers steal over $6 billion from the largest cryptocurrency exchange
xCruzo Brief
Hackers linked to North Korea stole $6.3 billion from Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, according to Binance. The exchange said deposits were not impacted and that it is working with law enforcement and partners to freeze assets affected by the breach. A US blockchain intelligence firm, TRM Labs, attributed the attack to TraderTraitor, a North Korean hacking unit, saying it made the judgment with “high confidence.” TRM reported an attacker moved about USD 6.36 billion out of Binance wallets across ten blockchains, mostly within about 20 minutes. Binance co-CEO Richard Teng said initial findings suggest the incident began with a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop.
