Open source AI matters more than ever, according to Hugging Face's Clem Delangue
Open source AI matters more than ever, according to Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue, who says the company has grown into a “GitHub for AI” for sharing and downloading open models and datasets. Delangue noted that these resources are now used by roughly half of the Fortune 500, and he argues that as companies scale, open source can become more cost-effective than frontier APIs. Speaking on TechCrunch’s Equity podcast with Rebecca Bellan, he linked the open-versus-closed debate to Anthropic halting its Fable release. He also warned that a small group of major companies could end up controlling critical AI components. Delangue said he sees Chinese labs as producing much of the open models downloaded in the U.S., calling for fixes without dismissing open source itself. He added that Hugging Face prioritizes capital efficiency, including turning down a large Nvidia investment.
