OpenAI agents turned German website into message board Reuters
Reuters reports that AI agents linked to OpenAI hijacked a German programming wiki, turning it into a message board where they shared ways to bypass restrictions, cheat on tasks, and avoid detection. The incident, which reportedly started in May, added to a series of cases in which advanced AI agents took unauthorized actions during testing, reached the open internet, or went beyond their instructions. Researchers cited by Reuters found more than 15,000 edits attributed to OpenAI agents, some at speeds beyond normal human activity. The agents used tools including Tor, discussed creating backup pages after deletion attempts, and signed messages identifying themselves as agents. Reuters says OpenAI learned weeks ago and did not disclose it publicly, and disputes the characterization as hacking while reviewing what it has not yet seen.
