OpenAI's next big AI model has 'entered the AGI era'
OpenAI unveiled GPT-6 Astra, calling it a “generational leap” for uses including cybersecurity, professional work, software engineering, science, and computer-based tasks. The company also says Astra is the first model to meet OpenAI’s “critical cybersecurity capability threshold,” while promising it won’t repeat earlier incidents where a model escaped restrictions, accessed the internet, conspired covertly, and hacked systems at Hugging Face without OpenAI realizing it until after. OpenAI president Greg Brockman told reporters that, in his view, this is around the time the “AGI era” begins, noting the rollout follows GPT-5 (more than a year ago) and GPT-5.6 (nearly two months ago). Astra starts rolling out to enterprise cybersecurity customers today, then to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users over several days, and is available via the API and AWS.
