Paraguay Condemns Senator's Racist Remark Calling Kylian Mbappé a 'Colonised Cameroonian' After World Cup Exit
Paraguay condemned racist comments made by Senator Celeste Amarilla after France beat Paraguay 1-0 at the FIFA World Cup. The senator targeted France captain Kylian Mbappé on social media with racist insults following the match, prompting a response from Mbappé. He called Amarilla “despicable” and said she was “not worthy” of public office, adding that her remarks did not represent Paraguay or its people. Paraguay’s foreign ministry said the comments conflicted with national values and respect for human dignity. The dispute also drew condemnation in France: President Emmanuel Macron backed Mbappé, Sports Minister Marina Ferrari called the remarks disgraceful, and FIFA President Gianni Infantino denounced the abuse and urged unity against racism. Mbappé’s second-half penalty secured France’s quarter-final spot against Morocco.
