Romania says it shot down a second drone breaching its airspace, underscoring persistent tensions along the Ukraine border. The incident was reported on Saturday, July 25, after a first drone was brought down on Friday for the first time in Romania’s recent history of responding to airspace breaches. President Nicusor Dan said the second drone was destroyed at 8:30 a.m. local time (0530 GMT), about 10 km west of Sfantu Gheorghe in Romania’s Danube Delta. Romania’s defence ministry said radar detected the breach at 8:22 a.m. and two F-16 jets were scrambled. Prosecutors have said the Friday drone was Russian, while Saturday’s origin was not specified in the statement. Romania shares a 650-km land border with Ukraine and says Russian drones have breached its airspace around 30 times since Moscow’s 2022 invasion.
