Rural Louisiana teachers set to get $50K bonuses -- all thanks to Meta's AI data center

Rural Richland Parish teachers are set to receive bonuses exceeding $50,000 this year, a windfall fueled by Meta’s Hyperion data center project. Bonuses will climb to as much as $50,935, up from $10,200 last year, as sales-tax receipts surged during construction of Meta’s 4 million-square-foot facility. The district’s pay ranges run from about $29,504 to $52,335, and sales-tax receipts totaled $42.9 million in the first nine months of the current fiscal year. Meta separately paid the parish $22.4 million in May, and bonuses are funded through a 1% sales tax approved under a 1968 ordinance. Meta’s Louisiana project is expected to create 500 direct jobs, 1,000 indirect jobs, and 5,000 construction roles, with Monroe Mayor Friday Ellis estimating about 8,000 new workers in the area. Under the abatement plan, 80% of property taxes are forgiven and a 20% levy remains, while a 1% sales-tax agreement also funds the district. Richland Parish, with about 20,000 residents, had 163 full-time teachers in 2024-25, and support staff will receive bonuses of up to $17,472, up from $3,323. While supporters cite economic benefits, critics warn about housing, power, and affordability pressures linked to data-center growth.
