Russian Hackers allegedly offer Cryptocurrency Rewards through "Patriotic Online Games
A Russian cybercriminal group NoName057(16) has been recruiting via Telegram channels, offering cryptocurrency rewards to participants labeled Patriotic Volunteers who are assigned tasks ranging from DDoS attacks and ransomware distribution to intelligence gathering and cyber espionage against government and financial targets. The campaigns primarily target European nations that have supported Ukraine, reflecting the geopolitics fueling cyber conflict. Europol and partner agencies disrupted NoName057(16) infrastructure in Operation Eastwood, but the group reportedly recovered quickly and has broadened targets beyond Europe to include the United States, Canada, Israel, and Taiwan. Russian media outlets deny these allegations.
The broader takeaway is that the line between political motivation and criminal activity in cyber operations is increasingly blurred as such groups seek cryptocurrency-based rewards and expanded reach.
