Sam Altman Floats Industrywide Pause as Frontier AI Safety Concerns Grow | PYMNTS.com
Sam Altman is reportedly floating an industrywide pause as frontier AI safety concerns intensify, with hopes that other AI labs will join OpenAI in slowing down. According to the report, OpenAI did not immediately comment on PYMNTS’ request. OpenAI said Sept. 1 it delayed development and launch of its Astra model while it strengthened safeguards against “cyber misuse and unauthorized model actions,” and after testing Astra reached its first “Critical” cybersecurity threshold. Anthropic previously suggested in June that leading developers should slow or pause to allow societal and alignment work to catch up. A July statement signed by frontier AI employees urged the U.S. to support “deliberately pace” automated AI development, with signers rising to 1,386.
