Scientists discovered an unknown baby right whale off Canada. They say it's a cause for joy

Researchers say they’ve identified an unknown baby North Atlantic right whale off Canada, a rare breakthrough after months of winter surveys failing to spot the calf. Images and data were captured off Anticosti Island in Quebec in September by scientists with Mingan Island Cetacean Study. The New England Aquarium in Boston later analyzed the material and concluded the calf was likely born months earlier. The discovery brings the total number of baby right whales found from the most recent birthing season to 24, the most productive year since 2009 and the fourth-highest on record. The whale’s mother was Silt, a 38-year-old known female. North Atlantic right whales number about 380 worldwide.
