OpenAI has added an Apple Messages plugin for the ChatGPT desktop app on Apple silicon Macs, letting ChatGPT read and analyze iMessage, SMS, and RCS conversations from the user’s Messages inbox. The plugin can draft replies, delete messages, and send texts through the Messages app—using the user’s own name and chat bubble, with the recipient seeing no obvious sign the text was computer-generated. OpenAI says the plugin runs locally, does not create an index of someone’s messages, and only works in the desktop app. Default approvals require user confirmation, but persistent approval can be switched on per conversation, removing the last review step.
