Slimmer Than iPhone: SpaceX Takes Aim At Smartphone Market With New AI Device
SpaceX takes aim at the smartphone market with a new slim, phone-like AI device prototype, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The AI and rocket company has shown investors a handset-like design described as slimmer than an iPhone, with a sleek appearance, though it remains in prototype stage. People familiar with the matter said the device is expected to use a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, suggesting testing of a consumer hardware layer that could integrate Starlink connectivity, xAI software, and a proprietary operating system. The project is framed as part of Elon Musk’s broader push to build a vertically integrated consumer connectivity stack beyond satellites and broadband. Analysts have previously discussed possible strategic moves if SpaceX/Starlink cannot secure an MVNO/retail mobile deal, including acquiring T-Mobile, and SpaceX told some investors the effort is early. The report ties the initiative to Musk’s frustration with how Apple controls distribution of third-party apps and to broader ambitions affecting smartphone, app-store, and AI-assistant ecosystems.
