Some G.O.P. Lawmakers Pan Hegseth's Plan to Stream Execution of Fort Hood Shooter
Some Republican members of Congress criticized Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s plan to livestream the Dec. 3 execution of Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the man responsible for the 2009 Fort Hood mass shooting. While some opponents said the broadcast was inappropriate, others on the party side applauded it. Rep. Austin Scott of Georgia said he supports the death sentence but argued livestreaming is what “jihadists do,” calling it un-American. Sen. Thom Tillis called the idea “beyond disgusting,” comparing it to actions of repressive regimes. The Pentagon said it will broadcast the execution, conducted by the military’s first firing squad since World War II and its first execution by any method since 1961. Additional GOP lawmakers echoed concerns about turning executions into spectacle.
