South Korea's women web sleuths fight AI deepfake porn

In Seoul, a group of 23 South Korean women working at the National Center for Digital Sexual Crime Response is targeting AI-enabled deepfake pornography and related digital sex crimes. Using generative technology and a victim’s face, offenders can fabricate explicit images that are used for harassment and blackmail. The center, created in 2018, has a network with headquarters and 17 regional hubs offering counseling, legal support, and evidence collection for prosecutions. In 2025, it removed 318,000 videos and photos—deepfakes, spycam content, and intimate material shared without consent—on behalf of 10,600 people, 75% of them women and girls. Officials cite rapid action and public-outcry momentum.
