SpaceX launched NASA’s Roman Space Telescope, a $4.3 billion mission, early after daybreak on a Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center. The observatory, named for Nancy Grace Roman, NASA’s first chief astronomer, is expected to take more than three months to reach its destination about 1 million miles away, an observation point also used by the Webb Space Telescope. Roman will deliver the widest field of view yet, enabling studies that span thousands of supernovae, tens of thousands of planets, billions of galaxies, and tens of billions of stars. NASA leaders said Roman will help probe dark matter and dark energy, working alongside Webb and other observatories.
