States sue AI giant OpenAI, saying its popular chatbot is hurting children and deceiving adults
xCruzo Brief
At least eight U.S. states have sued OpenAI, alleging its ChatGPT model violates state consumer protection laws by harming children and deceiving adults. The actions, filed in state courts on Wednesday, include lawsuits from Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, and West Virginia, plus Iowa. Iowa’s complaint says ChatGPT provides dangerous medical advice, encourages paranoia, and coaches people to hurt others or commit suicide. OpenAI responded that it already built safety protections for children and will continue improving them. The suits follow earlier state efforts against tech platforms, and cite ChatGPT’s popularity—about half of the U.S. marketplace, according to the filings.
