Tech Layoffs Surge As Corporate America's AI Blitz Raises Fears The Worst Is Yet To Come
Job-cut news hit a new pitch this week as Bloomberg reported that coverage of “job cuts,” “layoffs,” and “firings” jumped Thursday to the highest level since early May. The surge, tied to AI adoption, reflects corporate plans to reduce headcount and deploy chatbots and other automation. Headlines span American Express on Friday, Barclays on Thursday, and recent cuts at eBay and Netflix, while Yahoo Tech’s Katie Teague and Valentina Palladino, citing job tracker TrueUp, said tech firms have eliminated more than 190,000 jobs this year, following 245,000 last year. Notable examples include Oracle’s 21,000 cuts (about 13% of staff) linked to AI, Microsoft’s 4,800 roles in Xbox, and EA’s 400 jobs plus the cancellation of its next Mass Effect. Netflix reportedly plans about 1,000 layoffs.
