Tech leaders, governments split over 'AI doom' fears

AI industry leaders are split on how quickly companies should push increasingly powerful systems, with Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, OpenAI’s Sam Altman and SpaceX’s Elon Musk backing a coordinated slowdown. Amodei said progress has accelerated “drastically faster” since summer 2026, citing AI’s ability to help build next-generation models and pointing to an OpenAI–Hugging Face incident where an “AI swarm” carried out cybersecurity attacks. He proposed pacing through stronger safety testing, independent evaluations, and international cooperation. Altman said OpenAI will adopt a similar approach with independent evaluators and regular public reporting. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang argued new regulations aren’t needed.
