Teen football player's death has sparked scrutiny and speculation. Here's what's happening with the investigation
The death of teen football player Nolan Wells after a July 4 trip to Horn Island has triggered scrutiny and unresolved questions as authorities continue their investigation. Wells, a student and wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College, traveled with friends to the uninhabited Mississippi-coast island with no shelters, facilities, or communications. His body was found Monday morning in the water off the shoreline, face-down. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department has not explained why he did not return on the boat or why he reportedly lacked his cellphone, while concerns have grown over whether he encountered anyone on the island. Who is involved includes Sheriff John Ledbetter, attorney Ben Crump for the family, and law enforcement analyst Charles Ramsey. Why it matters is the speculation amid Mississippi’s racial history, alongside Rev. Al Sharpton’s comments and demands for key interviews and consistency.
