The AI regulation smackdown isn't over

AI leaders’ early push toward tighter AI regulation is colliding with sharp disagreements over how much government should play a role. Over the weekend, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei outlined a three-step approach, including third-party evaluators inside labs, industry coordination, and international agreements with potential government help. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis, and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk signaled support for aspects of the plan. But the Trump administration has dismissed a safety crisis as a “hoax,” while Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg argued against limiting companies’ autonomy. The Wall Street Journal also reported Zuckerberg, Musk, and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang blocked an industry-funded independent AI regulator similar to FINRA.
