This App Locks You Out of Your Social Media Accounts Until You Hit Your Step Count
The new walking mode from WeWard locks users out of select social media apps until they meet their step targets, aiming to cut screen time while increasing activity. On Wednesday, the free French fitness app backed by tennis star Venus Williams introduced the feature for iOS and Android, blocking chosen apps such as TikTok or YouTube until a personalized step count is reached. The mode resets automatically at midnight, provides notifications throughout the day, and can be turned off when needed. WeWard can connect to wearables like the Apple Watch and third-party services including Apple Health. The app also uses gamification to earn points via games and challenges, redeemable for cash, gift cards, or charitable donations. In a prior press release, WeWard said walking rose by nearly 25% on average after downloads, while users spent only a few minutes per day inside the app. WeWard says it does not sell user data, and revenue comes from ads, offers, affiliate partnerships, in-app purchases, and a premium subscription without ads.
