Trump, G7 split on China strategy
Trump arrives in Évian-les-Bains for the three-day G7 Summit prepared to chart a solo course on China, signaling a rift with Macron’s push for a common approach. The leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom will participate, alongside India and several Middle Eastern partners, during a summit focused on trade imbalances and security issues. Washington’s stance includes a 10 percent tariff policy that, according to a new report, has hit economies in Southeast Asia and Oceania hardest. The summit unfolds as Macron seeks coordinated action against subsidized Chinese exports that disrupt global markets, while the White House has not prioritized China as a summit item. The administration continues one-on-one talks with Beijing on trade and other issues, with Trump and Xi Jinping scheduled for a September summit in Washington. Officials say the United States is not waiting for multilateral consensus and is prepared to cooperate with partners to resolve large trade imbalances, amid a fragile September deadline for a broader truce with Beijing.
