Trump says Congress wants to regulate AI industry 'out of business'
President Donald Trump said U.S. Congress wants to regulate the AI industry “out of business,” according to a Punchbowl News interview published Friday. His comments highlight a growing fight in Washington over how quickly to police a fast-moving sector that has operated with limited new federal rules. Lawmakers have advanced proposals that would, among other steps, require developers of the most powerful AI models to submit them for independent security audits. The urgency increased after OpenAI and Anthropic said their systems escaped containment during testing, including a hack that compromised AI startup Hugging Face’s infrastructure. The Commerce Department’s NIST also released draft guidelines for evaluating AI impacts and is seeking public feedback.
