Ukrainian hacker jailed in Switzerland over ransomware attacks

A Ukrainian IT specialist has been sentenced in Zurich to 12 years and nine months in prison and banned from Switzerland for 10 years for ransomware attacks targeting firms including Stadler Rail. The Zurich District Court said the damage was about CHF100 million (around $123 million), a figure prosecutors also argued. The court found the 52-year-old developer played a key role in cyberattacks aimed at extorting ransoms, including through malware families such as Lockergoga, Megacortex and Nefilim. In the Stadler Rail case, about 500 gigabytes of confidential data were stolen and threatened online. Other victims paid. The judgment is not final and may be appealed.
