Vietnam moves to strengthen digital shield amid rise of AI, deepfakes

Vietnam is ramping up a “digital shield” as AI and deepfake technology make online content harder to verify. The effort combines institutional reforms and stronger legal backing aimed at protecting national digital sovereignty, according to reporting that cites Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW from the Political Bureau dated December 22, 2024. While AI, big data and deepfakes are technological achievements, the risks grow when they are used for fabrication and distortion. Officials warned that AI can generate large volumes of text, images, audio and video quickly, while deepfakes can create persuasive “fake evidence.” The plan stresses early warning, faster verification across authorities and experts, and proactive communications once information is confirmed. Directive No. 57-CT/TW, dated December 31, 2025, also calls for stronger cybersecurity and data security.
