Violent Haitian gang releases women and children after mass kidnapping and deadly attack

UNICEF says a gang in Haiti released six children and seven women after kidnapping more than 50 people following a deadly attack on the community of Kenscoff, near Port-au-Prince, nearly a week earlier. The UN children’s agency reported late Friday that among those freed are three children under age 2, a 7-year-old, and two teenage girls. UNICEF said it worked with community leaders to secure the release, though it was unclear if the group needed medical treatment and whether more women and children remain in captivity. Mass abductions are rarer than individual kidnappings. During the attack late Sunday, gangs killed at least 47 people. A gang leader known as Izo 2 had warned he would execute hostages if police killed any gang members.
