WATCH -- Sherpa Guide Who Disappeared on Mount Everest Survives for Days Without Extra Oxygen: 'A Miracle' anchors this remarkable rescue. Dawa Sherpa, a 52‑year‑old guide, vanished Friday while descending with a Polish climber and was later spotted crawling down above base camp by a cleaning crew. He survived nearly a week without food, water, or supplemental oxygen, navigating the treacherous Khumbu Icefall after fixed ladders were removed for the season. A rescue helicopter airlifted him to a hospital. The incident underscores the dangers of Everest, where more than 7,000 summits have occurred since 1953 and around 200 bodies remain on the mountain, with 132 climbers among the fatalities and Sherpas accounting for a portion of those losses.
