What Google's new AI study tells us about how we really use AI
Google’s new AI & Economy ATLAS report aims to clarify how people actually use AI in everyday life, and its scale and findings are detailed. Published on July 23, 2026, the ongoing study—Activity, Task, Landscape, and Adoption Study—analyzes 15 million anonymized human-AI conversations across products including the Gemini app, AI Mode in Search, and the Gemini API. Google says the dataset covers over 150 countries, 140 languages, 800 occupations, and 4,000 tasks, and is designed to be de-identified and anonymized to limit any link to individuals. The report finds AI at work is “broad but shallow,” with AI used in about 21% of tasks within roles, and fewer than 10% of work interactions fully automate tasks. Google also reports that AI use is common outside offices: 86% of interactions occur at home, including for research and administrative matters. It notes tradespeople use conversational and multimodal AI, while adoption varies by country.
