WTO more than doubles global trade forecast, driven by AI boom
xCruzo Brief
The World Trade Organization (WTO) has sharply lifted its forecast for global goods trade growth in 2026, projecting a rise of 3.9% versus the previously expected 1.9%. The WTO said the main driver is a surge in investment tied to artificial intelligence (AI). In the first half of 2026, demand for semiconductors, data centres, and digital infrastructure contributed significantly to goods trade growth, according to a report released Thursday. The WTO also expects goods trade to grow 4.1% in 2027, after global trade grew 4.6% last year. The WTO cited supply-chain adaptation amid Middle East disruption and weaker energy and fertilizer markets.
