YFK will be a transportation hub as YFK growth plan approved
A regional council approved a long-term vision and strategy for Waterloo Region’s YKF airport under the YKF Growth Plan, covering the next 20 years. The release said the plan provides direction on how the airport will expand, serve a growing community, respond to industry opportunities, and strengthen its role as an economic driver for Waterloo Region. Karen Redman, regional chair, called approval a milestone for the Region of Waterloo International Airport’s continued success, positioning YKF to better serve residents, visitors, and the aerospace and aviation sectors. The plan includes a “transportation hub” concept linking air service with GO Transit, ION, Grand River Transit, and inter-city bus through a future terminal vision. It also emphasizes a “just-in time” infrastructure approach building on the 2017 plan, sustainability via reduced carbon emissions, and support for airport tenants and the AeroWR sector initiative. It will manage competing land uses through Airport Zoning Regulations and was shaped by input from residents, passengers, tenants, airline partners, businesses, and municipal stakeholders.
