Young anglers cast off at Cedar Beach Snapper Showdown

Young anglers and their families gathered at Cedar Beach West in Mount Sinai on Aug. 29 for the annual Cedar Beach Snapper Showdown, hosted by the Town of Brookhaven. Town Supervisor Daniel J. Panico and Councilwoman Jane Bonner joined children under 18 for a morning fishing derby that combined competition with time on the waterfront. Oliver won the top prize. The first 50 registered participants received a rod-and-reel combination or a T-shirt. Panico and Bonner credited the Montauk Surfcasters Association and sponsors for organizing the event, with suggested donations benefiting the Mount Sinai Marine Environmental Stewardship Center. A next derby, the Keith Romaine Memorial Snapper Derby, is scheduled for Sept. 13, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Union Avenue Dock in Center Moriches.
