Albanian anti-government protesters clash with police in Tirana

Thousands of young Albanians clashed with riot police in central Tirana on Saturday outside the Education Ministry, the fifth day of a student-led push for Prime Minister Edi Rama to resign. Masked protesters threw rocks as police responded with stun grenades, tear gas and a water cannon. The unrest follows protests over corruption and jobs, and includes this week’s reported attacks on government buildings and smashed windows. Police said 500 protesters had been detained, with 330 released, while 120 police and 45 protesters were recorded injured. Analysts view the upheaval as the biggest challenge to Rama since he took office in 2013 and won a fourth term last year.
