Belgium to 'continue to pursue' Folarin Balogun decision explanation from FIFA
Belgium says it will continue to pursue its explanation request to FIFA after the U.S. striker Folarin Balogun had a one-game ban suspended, allowing him to play in the Round of 16 match in which Belgium beat the United States 4-1 on Monday night. Balogun had been sent off against Bosnia and Herzegovina, which normally triggers a minimum one-match ban that cannot be appealed under FIFA rules. FIFA announced on Sunday—one day before the game—that the suspension was overturned, and U.S. President Donald Trump later said he contacted FIFA president Gianni Infantino to seek a review. FIFA insisted the disciplinary body acted independently, but UEFA said FIFA crossed a “red line.” Belgium’s federation tried to appeal but was denied for “no standing,” and FIFA has yet to provide details of how the decision was reached. Belgium next faces Spain in the quarterfinals on Friday in Los Angeles.
