Byron Donalds is Florida's new governor. What is next for DeSantis?

Florida elected its first Black governor on Tuesday night, choosing Republican U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds over Democrat David Jolly. With 99% of precincts reporting, Donalds won 50% of the vote to Jolly’s 48.7%, a margin of under 2 percentage points, extending the GOP’s nearly three-decade control of the state. Donalds thanked President Donald Trump and Gov. Ron DeSantis. DeSantis, governor since 2019, leaves office in January after his second term ends, with his exit set for Jan. 5, 2027. Analysts speculate about post-governor roles, including a potential White House or cabinet position, though DeSantis has offered few details.
