Charlotte is bringing back red light cameras: What to know
Charlotte is bringing back red light cameras as part of a one-year pilot designed to reduce traffic deaths at high-risk intersections. City council approved the plan on Monday, June 22, after 34 fatalities were reported in the first half of the year. Cameras will be installed at 10 high-injury locations, including intersections such as Norris Avenue and North Graham Street, and Central Avenue and North Sharon Amity Road. Drivers recorded running red lights will receive a $75 ticket mailed to the registered car owner, with an added $100 fee for drivers who do not respond. The program is expected to cost $600,000, generate about 500 citations per month, and bring projected annual revenue of $4.5 million, with about 90% required under state law to go to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
