Cincinnati is developing a Climate Migration Readiness Plan aimed at helping the region absorb climate-displaced residents. Researchers project that by the end of the century up to 13 million Americans could move inland from coastal areas due to sea level rise. Cincinnati’s plan targets up to 525,000 newcomers by 2050, including climate migrants and other “broader domestic relocation trends.” It calls for denser housing, expanded public transit, reduced reliance on fossil fuels, and systematic monitoring of indicators such as stress in the housing insurance market. Experts say it’s a strong starting bid as more cities compete for people displaced by intensifying floods, wildfires, and hurricanes.
